On the “Stallersattel” in East Tyrol Defereggen valley: Already hundreds of years ago a very special smell has influenced the lives of people.
It is the typical smell of a unique stone pine forest, one of the last large populations of this species in the Eastern Alps. The water formed and shaped a habitat, home for the animals and for the people in the valley of pine, where despite progress, culture and tradition still to be lived. Embedded in the National Park “Hohe Tauern” and surrounded by the mountains of “Defereggen”, the “Rieserfernergruppe”, the “Lasörlinggruppe” and “Schobergruppe” is the Defereggen valley.
The stone pine is only one part. The special of the Defereggen valley results from many: From majestic mountains, a well maintained natural and cultural landscape, embedded in the National Park “Hohe Tauern” , a vibrant culture and tradition, and especially from the people who shape the valley through their work and their lives.
